Roy Stark has been playing the blues for 30 years. First hearing the blues from English bands in the 1960s he felt an immediate affinity with the music
before knowing anything of it's true origin. Listening to 'Mike Raven's radio show' revealed what the blues was all about and soon he was travelling
in search of obscure blues records in 'Dobells' and 'Colletts' ( 'The' London record stores at the time ).An acoustic guitar followed by months painfully trying to
work out 'John Hurts' fingerpickin on 'Candyman' sealed his fate forever.
Over the years Roys music has made him many friends and opened many doors.
In the 70's he ran
a folk and blues club in Swindon,England and the fine guitar players he met there still inspire him to this day ( check out the links page for information ).
His career in the computer industry took him to Hong Kong where he set up
home in the early 1980s.He has appeared regularly at the Hong Kong Folk Festival and been active in the music scene there for 20 years.
He devolped a strong partnership
With Yan Kwai Wong ( aka Yank ) and they're still trying to turn Red China blue whenever they perform as a duo or as the infamous 'Recovering Alcoholics'.
Roy also formed
the band 'Asian Cajun' bringing Cajun and Zydeco music to Hong Kong for the first time . Though the band is long gone some recordings survive and strangely a tape turned up in 2004
in Scunthorpe,Lincolnshire - Roys' hometown in England - quite a co-incidence!
After a 2 year period working in Thailand ( Bangkok is probably the best Asian city to hear the blues at the moment )
Roy is spending more time in the UK and hopes to be gigging there regularly.
Roy plays guitar in the old country ragtime style , bottlenck in the delta blues style , mandolin , lap steel , and accordian .
If you're looking for a night of real blues book him now.
